January Updates

January 8, 2010

Sprig got to visit outside with us today.  He really looks amazing!  His hair is getting longer, he's putting weight back on, you can't see any scars on his left leg and he's still got a pretty good scar on his right hip.  He's putting his back feet down every step.  He's still got most of his weight on his front legs, but he can stand up on his own and he's getting his chest muscles back!  He walked around for a little while.  He had his support under his belly but really wasn't being supported.  The video is on facebook http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001172504329#!/video/video.php?v=156321367750279
We took him 2 bones from a rib roast (with a little meat left on them) instead of a bag of cookies this time, I think he preferred them over the cookies.
One of the techs told us their tank is not working again so Sprig hasn't been in the water for a couple days.  The physical therapist has been working with him on and off a ball trying to get him to shift some weight back on his back legs.  She's got both knees bending, increasing his range of motion in his hips and had him walk yesterday without any support.  It was just in a small circle, but he did it all by himself!!!!

Dr. Williams called tonight to let us know he thinks Sprig is doing great.  There are still some concerns with his right hip but all things considered Sprig is doing really well.  Dr. Williams will be out of the office next week so Sprig will continue with physical therapy.  The following week Dr. Williams is going to take some more x rays and in his words, maybe Sprig will be able to come home!!!!  His last x rays showed improvement but he wants to give it a little more time and make sure there aren't any degenerative problems before he lets him come home.  Let's all keep our fingers crossed!

Well, we've been waiting patiently all week for Dr. Williams to call and hoping Sprig would be coming home.  Charmin called to give us a heads up that Dr. Williams will call this weekend to discuss some things they can do to help Sprig.  Not at all what I was hoping to hear.  I didn't get any details, Dr. Williams will tell me all that in the next couple days.  All Charmin could tell me is that Sprig's x rays looked OK and since we've come this far we should do whatever else is necessary to make it easier on Sprig in the long run.  All I can think about is what they told me the last resort would be....removing the top of Sprig's femur and all the complications he's had after all the other surgeries on that hip.  I'm not sure I'm willing to put him through anything else right now as long as he's able to get around and he's not in pain.  I know I need to wait for all the details, I don't even know what it is Dr. Williams wants to do.  It's just another heartbreaking set back.  Monday will be 6 months Sprig has been in the hospital.  We were really hoping he was finally coming home.
