SPRIG IS HOME!!!!!!!!!!!
February 24, 2011
Sprig has been making amazing progress since he's been home! He had almost no energy when he got here. We'd go on short walks then come in and nap for a while. He's gradually walking longer and longer each day. He gets tired of laying on his bed in the house and wants to get up and walk more and more. He's always loved being outside, so we'll go out and just sit in the yard or lay in the dirt.....something I'm sure he didn't get enough of in the hospital. He can't just walk in the yard where it's somewhat level either (I let him lead the way and walk where he wants). He has to go out where we had the trees cleared and there are huge tractor tire tracks in the ground and sticks and branches all over the place. And when he's ready to walk, he's ready! He's standing up before we can get his sling under him. I keep his sling tight going up and down the ramp, but when we're outside walking it's limp under him so he's walking on his own. I took him outside yesterday and sat him down in the yard while I fed and watered the chickens. I turned around in the chicken pen and Sprig was standing at the gate! He got up and walked about 15 yards on his own! I know he's not supposed to be walking unassisted yet, but I couldn't fuss at him. I was so tickled he had done it I couldn't make him think he'd done something wrong. I don't think it will be too much longer and he'll be completely on his own. He's got a checkup with Dr. Williams next Friday. I hope he's as happy with Sprig's progress as we are. Dr. Williams still wanted to do a femoral head extraction and we decided against it. To Dr. Williams' credit, he didn't press the issue. He told me Mother Nature sometimes does her own thing and it may turn out that Sprig will be just fine without the procedure.
